I was so shocked to hear what my family just told me.
Our own very close relatives taught their children not to shake hands with my family because we have a different religion. I was so shocked because, ok, they never said Merry Christmas, let alone Happy Easter to our family. That was just, no big deal since we were so used to it. But this time, it came as a shock that as parents, my cousins teach their children that people with other religions are evil and therefore we do not deserve their greetings. So shocked because at such an early age, my "niece" and "nephew" can say to my family:
No, I won't shake hands with you because you are Christians.
And whenever they meet with people from different religions, they ask:
Dad, can I shake hands with them?
At the same time, I also learned from my own reactions. I was so sad and hurt that I told my family to have nothing to do with them. I unfriended them from Facebook. I announced their bad deed as a Facebook status. Meanwhile, my mother, who is wise as always, replied calmly that it's ok. She forgives them. Doesn't the Bible teach us to forgive?
Oh, Mom...
