It's day two! We left Nashville for Memphis, a three-hour drive.
Our visiting scholar friend loves Elvis Presley, so we decided this would be an Elvis day spent visiting his Graceland mansion. Graceland is totally a tourist trap (parking fee, expensive entrance/tour fee, photo fee, OH MY) but it was worth the cultural experience. I personally heard about Elvis a lot from my late father, so I found myself thinking about my father throughout the tour.
We ended up spending around 5 hours in Graceland. I learned about determination and achievement from Presley's life- someone whose life is dedicated to a single thing - music. Through it, he touched so many others who became his great fans, from all parts of the world. We found several older women who traveled with their younger families. They just sat in front of the big screen for a long time, watching and singing along with videos of Elvis's past tours. What a life spent with hard work and dedication. I can only imagine how hard it was to be him, challenges that he had to overcome, all the pressures that he had to endure. Like one of Elvis's favorite songs, beyond the work there must be grace. Amazing grace.
Ecclesiastes 3:20. All go to the same place; all come from dust, and to dust all return.
We decided to visit one of our friends whose parents live in Memphis and had a great dinner with him.
After a nine hour drive, we arrived home safely. See you again, Tennessee!
