I took this picture at my campus's union almost a month ago. A Dr. someone before graduation ceremony, walking alone around campus with her video camera, trying her best to capture every single detail of her life the last... three? four? five years?
This picture (part of it was about memory, but also about achievement) came back as I reflected a piece of graduate school life that I just witnessed and I was thankful that it did not happen very often:
A: Hey what are you going to write for this final project?
B: Oh, something. I won't tell you of course.
(my "sesuka hati" translation: I don't trust you. You will steal my idea. I won't share anything.)
A: I still need to do the fieldwork assignment. Did you do that?
B: Yes. I won't tell you though where I went.
(my "sesuka hati" translation: I don't trust you. You will steal my idea. I won't share anything.)
A: I really like this book (and this person went on to tell what the book was about)
B: I like talking to you because you always give me an idea.
(my "sesuka hati" translation: I don't trust you. You will steal my idea. I won't share anything. But I can use your idea.)
B: How would you approach this?
A: I think this problem can be approached this way (goes on explaining)
B: Thanks, I got an idea now.
(my "sesuka hati" translation: I don't trust you. You will steal my idea. I won't share anything. But I can ask you about your idea. And I can use your idea.)
????????????????????????????
i rarely thought about grad students behavior and overprotective attitudes.. but i think i can easily imagine. for me, it's ironic... i always love to share about what i research..... because it fascinates me to talk about it... and usually the more i share the more i get inputs/encouragements/support/and friends :)
ReplyDeletewuakkakakka.......so are you A or B?????? ;)
ReplyDeleteoh no .. this is sooooo selfish ...
ReplyDeleteSo human eh? I just realized that I am surrounded by people who are in the business of sharing knowledge. And I never saw them running out of ideas. Give, and it will come back to you.
