Enjoy

Today I had a conversation with someone about my thesis. He talked about getting the thesis done, etc. and it got to the point where I said that it was important to enjoy what we wrote. To my surprise, he said that we didn't need to enjoy it; it was more important to just get it done. Wow! Had the world changed without me knowing it?
If I thought about everything from the view point of just "getting it done," I was robbed of my humanness!

- I got up because I had to.
- I showered because I had to.
- I ate because, well, I had to!
- I wore clothes because - I had to? :D
- I worked because I had to. Yes, most of us felt that way.
- Everything I did was because... I had to.

While in fact, enjoying it and getting it done could make such a big difference.
That made me remember one of the readings I had last semester. Donna Haraway said that everything should begin with love and appreciation - when she talked about human and non-human relationships. So when we viewed a "paper," often times we looked at the paper as merely an "it." A non-living thing. Something dead. What if with appreciation, we thought about a paper as something with life in it? Last semester, my good friend Rae wrote a paper about her pregnancy, and that paper surely had a life. That paper talked, to her, to me - as one of her readers, and I was sure to many other people who read it as well. I liked to think about it as not only I wrote or created a paper, but that paper also created me. It wrote me.

If I got another opportunity to ask, I would ask that I enjoyed what I did, or what "it" (whatever it was) did, to me.

p.s. And now I'll enjoy reading Maryamah Karpov and watching Laskar pelangi, both sent by Vivi in NY. Thanks Vi, because you know what it means to enjoy something.

  1. by the way...tonight I saw "Sang Pemimpi" on the cinema with my lovely..In my opinion,"Sang Pemimpi" is the worst than another..(The best "Edensor" I think).
But Actually, the film is better than the first one.."Laskar Pelangi",eventhough it still has long duration, almost 140 minutes, and I thought it'll needed a few editing, cause there'r many useless pictures. But,generally,Riri Riza described that more detail than the first, and touchy...made me sad on a few scenes...
    I suggest u to see that movie...inspiring!

  2. Is it the worst because it is short or because of the story? Actually I like the book, first because it tells me that education (and schools) doesn't have to be as sophisticated and "mentereng," as today to produce not only smart people but people who dream and who love what they do. And it also teaches me that there's a circle of friends that really matters because they are "there" with us, accompany us with their own dreams. We may not have exact same likes and dislikes and we may miles apart, but we know they are there. And you know, Kart, that you're one of them :)

Hmmm, I really would like to see the movie after what you told me. Now I have to figure out who will go home to Indonesia so that I can "nitip" to buy the DVD of Sang Pemimpi... heehee...

  4. hm... i wonder if you can just download the movie online :)

Yes, i'm agree with you. But i think it's a decession we make whether we enjoy something or not. Even in the worst situation, we can decide to enjoy it.

I'm struggling to enjoy teaching science which is not my preference. I prefer teach english. But since God put me on this position now, i try to enjoy it and trying to do my best. i believe there is a purpose for everything and God will always give His children the best :)

    so, let's not stop enjoying!
